We spent 10 days and 11 nights in a beautiful valley in the Gran Paradiso National Park, where mountain peaks on either side were over m above sea level. This made for some wonderful hiking during a couple of free mornings, where we ascended and descended over m, and walked right up into the snow. You couldn't have asked for a more picturesque location for deep appreciation of the climate system!

The lectures were top quality across a great range of topics including large scale dynamics of the ocean and atmosphere, modelling the snowball earth, gravity waves in a rotating tank, and dynamical systems analysis and bifurcations aka tipping points.

A great feature of the school was that many of the lecturers gave three different lectures, allowing them to delve deeply into their topic of choice, and covering an astonishing range of subjects. There were also lively discussions during and after the lectures, and not without some friendly banter and controversy.

Food was definitely a highlight of the school, with three-course lunches and four-course dinners the norm throughout the 10 days, both served with delicious red wine. It was purely a matter of self-control to make sure we didn't go overboard with this. And with espressos served after every meal, as well as coffee breaks, it was not unusual to have coffees a day - somehow it felt normal doing so. We got to know a fantastic group of students, who came from all over Europe, with a few also coming from India, Korea, and the Americas.

We could only marvel at their linguistic skills: one guy in particular could speak Spanish, Italian, English, French, Russian, German and Portuguese, putting our minimal second language skills to shame. The dinner conversations were always memorable. On the last night we had rounds of folk singing in various different languages.

Waltzing Matilda made it in there, though some words were a bit fudged. We both took the opportunity to travel to other parts of Italy. David visited a collaborator, Riccardo Farneti, at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, and stopped by Venice on the way to the school.

After the school ended, we both visited Turin and Verona, where we saw a Verdi opera in a stunning Roman Arena similar to the Colosseum. Nicola then continued her travels to Siena, Florence and Cinque Terre, while we both visited Milan on our way back home.

Many thanks to the Centre of Excellence for funding our trip to the summer school, we learned a lot and had a great time in Italy. David also thanks Riccardo Farneti for hosting him and generously assisting with his travel costs to Trieste.

Mustafi, who made a mistake to allow Jesse Lingard to put the visitors 2-0 ahead inside the opening 11 minutes as United left the Emirates Stadium with three points, had been enjoying arguably his strongest spell in the Arsenal side since joining in the summer of 2016. Villarreal's Pablo Fornals had to be taken to hospital after fainting during training and the midfielder will miss Sunday's LaLiga game against Barcelona as a result.

Fornals made an "immediate recovery" but remains under observation in hospital, it was confirmed by the club on Saturday. The 21-year-old is reported to have been suffering from low blood sugar.
